Back In The U.S.S.R:
A decade of change musically and politically
The 1960s was a decade of change, both musically and politically. Not only did the 60s mirror the ongoing tensions of the Vietnam War era but this was also when Martin Luther King Jr. started speaking publicly. King had initiated his famous non-violent protests to initiate the abolish of segregation.
Along with King standing up against segregation, many women's rights activists were standing up for their rights as well. This initiated many young people standing up and challenging the establishment for the better. |
When The Beatles were asked about what their views were on the war and if it influenced their music in any way, the group had quite a bit to say.
"I think about it everyday, and its wrong. Anything to do with war is wrong. They're all wrapped up in their Nelson's and their Churchill's and their Monty's- always talking about war heroes... how we killed a few more Huns here or there. It makes me sick." - George Harrison " All of our songs are anti-war." -John Lennon "We're constantly being asked all sorts of very profound questions. But we're not very profound people. People say, what do you think about the H-bomb, of religion, of fan worship? But we didn't really start thinking about these things until people asked us and even than didn't get much time to consider them. What do i think of the H-bomb? Well, here's an answer with the full weight of the five O levels & one A level behind it; "I don't agree with it". -Paul McCartney |
